Here is a good article on the use of advanced composites in Boeing's new Dreamliner. The unknowns in composite design and modeling show that nothing beats the guess and check method of composites design; where you start with a coupon sample of the composite. Test and destroy the sample. Build a small prototype, test and destroy. Working up to the life-size prototype which will be tested and destroyed for certification.
